Queen Elizabeth

Description

Elizabethan England was marked by the reign of the last Henry VIII's children - Queen Elizabeth I. When she came to the throne, the nation was torn by strife and economic depression. The likelihood of being overrun by Spain was very real. By the time of her death, the situation had changed substantially. England had successfully repelled an invasion attempt by Philip II of Spain, and the nation's economy was doing much better. The arts - especially the literary arts - were flourishing and the Renaissance in England was leading the way across Europe.

Objectives

Students will identify and explain a unique aspect of life in Elizabethan England, or they will give a brief biography of an historically important person from the Elizabethan period.

Special instructions

  1. I recommend you start with the directory page about life in Elizabethan England as you begin this assignment.
  2. For this assignment you will create an essay of three to four paragraphs in the form of a newspaper article. It will address the who, what, when. where - and if possible the how and why of the topic or person you choose.
  3. You can choose one of the categories on the directory page or one of the people listed on it.
  4. The directory will probably not be the only source you will use for your article, but a complete listing here would be non-sensical.
  5. You will need to include a works cited page. Use the MLA format you are learning in your English classes.
